Brown Bag Lunch for city food bank
On Tuesday, event organizers kicked off the event by thanking its long-term sponsors and encouraging more companies across the city to come on board.
“This year we have 26 sponsors and are honouring the ones who have been with us right from the beginning,” said chair Ann O’Donnell-Beckwith. “This is our way of showing how grateful we are to all those who have stuck with us over the years.”
Of the 10 sponsors who have backed the event from the beginning O’Donnell- Beckwith said Aecon Construction has been a lead sponsor for the last five years. Smitty’s Fine Furniture and Rockwell International started as regular sponsors and have increased their commitment this year.
The Brown Bag Lunch event encourages people to bring their lunch to work and then donate to the food bank what they would normally have spent buying a lunch. The event helps the food bank raise money to meet client needs for things not covered by any other program or resource in the community.
In conjunction with the Brown Bag Lunch event, a community barbecue is being held at Southworks Factory Outlet Mall, June 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Last year, the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank distributed 51,282 pounds of food to 33 agencies across Cambridge and North Dumfries. Through its emergency program, 12,692 food hampers were provided to adults and children. The food bank’s 400 co-op members made 12,882 visits to pick up food last year.
