Finding the right rug for your room is not only satisfying, but it makes the room feel more complete, comfortable, and warm. However, choosing that perfect rug among all the available options can be tricky. There are so many things to consider when it comes to choosing the perfect area rug for your living room, dining room, bedroom, laundry room, etc. Whichever room you are looking to get an area rug for, we have tips you can follow to make choosing a rug much easier, regardless of how small or large your space is.

And remember, while there are general rules to follow when it comes to choosing an area rug, you don't have to limit yourself to them. It is entirely up to you how you want your space to look and feel.

The Bedroom

Let's start with the bedroom; the oasis within your home. Creating a comfortable and relaxing bedroom is obviously extremely important. It's where you go to relax after a long day and to have a good night's rest. Rugs can actually give your bedroom a more warm and comfortable feel, even if it's carpeted. Don't be afraid to put a rug over the carpet and play with layers. If you want the bed to be the focal point of the room, measure the space so the rug extends two feet from the bed on either side. It doesn't have to be right up against the wall either. Just put the bottom two legs on the rug. Use light colours to ensure the room feels brighter and more spacious.

The Kitchen

Area rugs are not just for bedrooms and living spaces. They can drastically help improve the comfort in your kitchen, particularly in the spots where you stand the most, like at the sink or stove. The general rule is to keep it six inches from the cabinets. This is where runners come in handy. Opt for a hand-knotted rug to give off a farmhouse look or play with a patterned rug that matches the colours in your cabinets and decor. If you have a large kitchen, patterned rugs can reduce the appearance of space, and also complete it so it feels cozier. If you are worried about durability because of high foot traffic or would prefer a rug that is easy to clean (you are in the kitchen after all), look for a rug made with a synthetic material called polypropylene. This popular material is water and stain resistant and can be vacuumed regularly without compromising its texture or colour. Wool is also known for being quite durable and resistant to stains in high-traffic areas because of the type of fibre coils.
