The past year has been a strange one and not always easy, but there have been some bright spots. One is that many of us have had more time to spend with our loved ones—we’ve been working and studying side by side, we’ve been cooking and sharing more meals, we’ve even been playing more board games. A lot of this time together has been spent around the dining room table, so we think they deserve some attention. If you are considering a dining room do-over, here are some tips to help you get started.

The Perfect Fit

What size table is right for your home? First thing’s first: get your measuring tape, you’ll need the dimensions of your dining area. You’ll want to leave 42 to 48 inches between the edge of your table and the wall or other furniture. This ensures enough space for chairs to move in and out from the table and leaves room for people to pass while others are seated. Next, consider the size of your family—how many people will be sitting around the table on a daily basis? To sit comfortably and avoid knocking elbows, the general rule of thumb is to allow between 18 and 24 inches per place setting. If you do a lot of hosting but space is limited, consider a table with an extension leaf. You can easily turn a four top into an eight top with an extension leaf that will tuck away into the table when you’re not using it. To give yourself more flexibility in a smaller area like a kitchen, consider a drop-leaf table.

Bermex Expressions Dining Suite

This gorgeous Bermex Expression Dining Suite comes with an extension leaf that stores away in the table. It’s made from premium select North American Birch and is completely customizable.

The Right Shape

Square, rectangle, round, or oval—how do you know what shape is right for your home? The answer is symmetry. The most visually pleasing and comfortable dining area will have the same amount of space all around the table. So take a look at the shape of your dining area. If it’s a square space, your best bet is a square or round table, while a rectangle or oval is best suited to a rectangular dining room. Your next consideration should be corners—do you want them? Corners take up additional space so if your dining room is on the smaller side, consider an oval or round table. Oval and round tables also allow you to squeeze in an extra seat or two without leaving anyone stuck in that awkward corner spot.

Amisco Norcross Dining Set

The Amisco Norcross dining suite is inspired by a no-nonsense vintage industrial look and is available in dining, counter, and pub heights. It’s a stylish choice for a smaller dining space such as a kitchen.

Impeccable Style

Style is a personal choice and we want you to do you. But we can offer some guidelines to help you make the right choice for your home. The most important piece of advice we have is to keep it classy. We recommend avoiding trends that might look out of date in a few years. A quality dining table should last a good 10 years and minimal design will allow you to roll with the times. When considering style, look at how your new dining table might compliment the rest of your decor and think about diversifying. For example, if you have a lot of wood in your home, you might want to bring a new element into the space, perhaps a glass or marble tabletop or a metal base or legs. In terms of seating, think about mixing and matching—at a rectangular table, consider chairs around three sides of the table and a bench along the fourth. If you choose upholstered seats, select colors that will complement the decor in the rest of your home. Remember patterns can vary as long as you stay within the same color palette. Canadian furniture manufacturers Amisco and Bermex specialize in furniture for your dining room, both companies offer customizable options so you can choose the right style for your home.

Bermex Live Edge Table

We love this Bermex Live Edge dining suite - it’s farmhouse chic with a trestle base and mix and match seating.
