Moving into your first home is an exciting time. Your home is a place that you can make your own. No more putting up with someone else’s style — it’s your turn to decorate!

There’s so much to do when you move into a new home that it can be tricky to know where to start, which furniture pieces to buy, how much to spend, and how much to save.

Here are the top three items that our interior decorators believe you should have in your first home. (Hint: quality is key!)

1. A Good Quality Mattress

(Kingsdown mattress)

We all know how important getting a good night’s sleep is to living a happy and healthy life. This is one area where you don’t want to skimp.

There are lots of mattresses on the market to choose from, but Serta and Kingsdown are two of the highest-quality brands. With pocket coils, specialty foams and fibres, and support that conforms to you, you will get the rest you need with these options.

Kingsdown has a patented bedMATCH™ diagnostic system that can help determine the best mattress for optimal support — visit our showroom to test it out!

2. A Good Quality Sofa

(Decor-Rest sofa)

The sofa is one piece of furniture that gets a lot of wear and tear from daily use. Typically the largest piece of furniture in your living room, your sofa should be well-made to withstand daily life — no one wants to see a ripped, scratched, or sagging sofa in the centre of your new home.

While you will spend more money on a quality sofa, you will reap the reward because it will last much longer and look better in the long-term.

Sofas come in all shapes and sizes, and some can be customized to suit your specific design taste. From condo-sized to oversized and sofabeds to sectionals, there’s something for every new home.

Brentwood makes gorgeous sofas that will stand the test of time in both wear and style. Superstyle is another Canadian brand that offers high-quality sofas that range from traditional to casual.

3. A Good Quality Dining Set

(Bermex Dinali Dining Set)

While you may not always be hosting a large group of people, or trying to impress the in-laws, you do want to have a dining area that looks nice, stands the test of time, and offers you the flexibility to seat more than two people.

A dining table and chair set is a bit of an investment, but it’s one that will last — and if you decide on wood, you can refinish the surface if your colour scheme or style changes.

Adding a dining set that incorporates a bench along one side will also offer you increased seating and flexibility to host larger groups.

When you are looking at making a furnishing purchase or considering updating your space, it’s important to know what you like and what will work in your home. Here are descriptions of a few common decorating styles to help you determine your preferred style:

Traditional Decorating

(Magnussen)

Traditional style interior decorating has more of a classic look and feel. It incorporates larger, more substantial furnishings with sturdy construction. and tends to feature wood and rich fabrics.

Elaborate patterns and elegant finishes might adorn your sofa or accent chair. Layering tones and textures can add dimension and make you feel like you are surrounded by luxury.

Contemporary Decorating

(Palliser Alula sofa)

Contemporary style interior decorating, sometimes referred to as modern decorating, typically features clean lines, simple colour palettes, neutral tones, and furniture that isn’t overly busy with patterns or designs.

Adding elements of glass or metal are ways to help bring this contemporary style to life — but remember not to fill your space with decor. You should choose your accents carefully.

Urban Decorating

(Amisco)

Urban style interior decorating is often seen in condos and lofts, but has moved more into the home space as its strong design characteristics can bring a room to life.

Featuring metals and wood, this decorating style can have a bit of an industrial look and feel. It’s ultimately a blend of comfort and chic, incorporating sleek angles and strong design elements that create visual interest.

There are lots of other decorating styles, including eclectic, retro, minimalist, transitional, country, and more. What’s important to remember is that, while trends come and go, your style can remain — so select furnishings that will work for your lifestyle in the long-term.

Recently we had a customer ask us how to update her dining room. She had just moved to her dream home and the old table did not fit in with her new lifestyle. She loved her chairs and did not want to replace them and purchase all new.

We told her to Celebrate the Difference and just purchase a new table. With the help of a Smittys Interior Decorator and having a personalized in home service, she was able to create the perfect new table that fit in with her new lifestyle but celebrated the old and the differences. Smittys and the customer could not have been more thrilled with the completed dining room.

Here is the feedback we received from this customer. (photos submitted by customer)

Add new parsons fabric chairs to an old island or harvest table. Mix textures and ages and you will fall in love with your old pieces all over again. There is nothing that replaces the memories or texture that is created by keeping history and mixing it with today's comfort and ease.
