Now that we’re all spending more time in our homes, staring at the same furniture and the same decor in the same places, it can get kind of dull. You might be wondering how you can change things up without doing a home renovation or spending a lot of money.

Our interior decorators have put together a list of ideas to help you refresh your interior design. Read on for all the details!

Declutter and Discover New Space

Over time people collect things. It’s basically inevitable. Often, these items collect in areas throughout your home and you become so used to their presence that you don’t even really notice it anymore. 

Step 1: Notice the clutter.

Take the first step and go into your most used room and carefully look at every nook and cranny to see what is there. Are there items you don’t use or need? Are there things that don’t belong in that space, or even in your home?

Step 2: Sort the clutter.

Go through your stuff and organize it into piles. Try to be efficient to get this step finished in a timely way. This isn’t a time to reflect on each piece and how you acquired it. It’s not about memory lane...it’s about decluttering. Make piles for items you want to keep, items you want to donate, and items you want to dispose of.

Step 3: Remove the clutter.

Once your items are sorted, get them out of your space. Keep only those items that need to remain in that room. The goal is to have a much smaller selection of items to find places for in your room. Less clutter equals more space. (It’s also less stuff to dust!)

Reimagine Your Space

Step 1: Notice the furniture.

Take a look at where your furniture is currently placed. Consider where your sources of light are. Do you have windows to work around? Do you have a ceiling light or floor and table lamps? Are there doors, or is it an open-concept space?

Step 2: Get a fresh look.

Now, walk out of the room. Take a breath. Then walk back in and pretend it’s the first time you’ve entered the space. What immediately strikes you? It can be good or bad, that’s okay. Perhaps you’ve noticed that the sofa looks too big for the area it is in. Maybe you think that the walls feel a bit bare. There are countless things you might notice.

Step 3: Move the furniture.

Next, move your furniture around to find different locations that make good use of your space. For example, if your sofa was located with windows directly behind it, consider moving it to an entirely different location, ideally centered on an interior wall.

Step 4: Swap pieces from around your home.

Now that you’ve moved your sofa, consider side tables and an area rug. Try moving an area rug from another room of your home into your living room. This simple swap can completely refresh the look of your space. 

Add a side table on either side of your sofa for a balanced look. If you don’t have matching side tables, it doesn’t matter! In fact, you will create more visual interest if they don’t match. 

Another option, if you have bedroom night tables, is to try placing them next to your sofa. Just because they are officially “bedroom tables” doesn’t mean that they won’t look fabulous in your living room.

Get Creative!

Once your furniture is in place and the items you’ve decided to keep are reorganized, it’s time to get creative! Moving art, photos, mirrors, and other wall decorations around in your home will help you refresh your spaces.

If you have a large piece of art, you can hang that over the centre of your sofa. You could try placing a mirror over your sofa to add visual interest and help brighten your space. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, you could put together a wall collage of photographs.

In this blog, our interior decorating experts have put together their recommendations on the best kid-proof furniture for your home.

Performance Fabric

One of the most important features of kid-proof furniture is that it can be cleaned. Spills and accidents happen to the best of us, but when they do, we want to feel confident that the stain can be removed.

Performance fabrics, like leather and microfibre, are some of the best options for removing stains.

1. Microfibre is a densely-constructed material made from synthetic materials that are generally very durable and tend to repel liquids. This makes it a very stain-resistant fabric.
    
2. Leather is a natural material and very durable. Simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or use a mild soap and water mixture to remove stains. Avoid abrasive materials or cleaning solutions with ammonia.
