Everyone wants to have a carefree holiday and enjoy some fun times while hosting family and friends. No one wants to spend their holidays cleaning up broken glass or trying to remove stains.

While we understand that no one can guarantee that accidents won’t happen, the team at Smitty’s has a few helpful tips to help you get through the holidays without any “oops!” moments.

Move or Replace Breakable Decorative Items

If you are hosting children, people with pets, or guests who use assistive devices like canes or walkers, you will want to move your breakable decorative items to safe locations. Moving items to different locations will also help to refresh your space and create new visual interest.

We recommend:

  • Moving breakables from your coffee table, side tables, bathroom counters, and kitchen counters to safer locations like hutches, bedrooms, display cabinets, and bookshelves.

  • Replacing delicate glass vases with heavier glass vases to keep your florals on display, but with less risk for damage.

  • Switching tall candle holders with shorter versions, to reduce the chances of them being knocked over.

  • Exchanging real candles with battery-operated, flickering candles for additional safety precautions.

Avoid Allergies

You can’t always be sure what people are allergic to — there are so many different kinds of allergies these days. To be safe, we recommend the following:

  • Do not have bowls of nuts on display for eating or decoration.
    • Replace nuts with dried fruits or other snackable options that can be left out.

  • Showcase flower arrangements that do not have strong scents.
    • Avoid lilies whenever possible, as they produce a very strong smell.

  • Replace scented candles with unscented beeswax or soy candles.
    • As with florals, scented candles can activate a guest’s allergies.

Reduce Staining Potential

They say that you know it’s a real party when something has been broken or spilled. At Smitty’s, we don’t necessarily agree.

However, if you do have a spill, we recommend reducing the damage caused by a spill by using Zucora to remove stains in an effective, natural way. Zucora’s plant-based products are safe to use in any part of your home, from your child’s bed to your dining room chair — it’s even safe to use on your dog bed!

We hope these tips will help you enjoy your celebrations this season. The team at Smitty’s wishes you  healthy and happy holidays and a joyous new year!

Gorgeous white living room furniture sofa and armchairs

People have long argued about whether white is a colour or the absence of colour. Let’s set the record straight, in design and decor — white is a colour!

Always on trend, always in style, and always flexible, white is a perennial favourite because it can work in almost any space.

White Furniture Tips

1. It doesn’t have to be a “true” white.

People often worry that having white furniture in their home will make their room look too stark or too modern, but this doesn’t have to be the case. There are many shades of white, from bright white to warm vanilla, so you can choose the best kind of white for your room.

Smitty’s Pro Tip: While you don’t want to position a bright white sofa next to a cream coloured chair — because it will make the chair look dirty — you can have white accent tones to carry the colour scheme throughout the room, using throw pillows or decorative accent pieces.

2. There are solutions to stains.

Some people worry that having white furniture will be hard to maintain, and they are fearful of getting stains on the fabric. Fabrics can be treated with coatings to resist stains, and other fabrics like microfibre and leather can be easily wiped down. We also recommend using eco-friendly spot removers, like Zucora, to keep your furniture looking brand new.

3. White will go with anything.

It’s true what they say, “white goes with everything”. Having white furniture will create a foundational tone for your room and help you accent a particular focal point, colour, or theme.

A white sectional can be accented with colourful throw pillows, a blanket, and other decorative items. A white sofa and accent chairs can direct the focus of the room towards your fireplace or a piece of art on the wall.

Whatever your style, white can help you brighten your space, focus your attention, and create a calm environment. If you’re not sure where to start, come and speak with Smitty’s expert interior decorators — we’ll help you get white right.

Child spilling a liquid on a rug

Stains happen — whether you’ve got kids at home, pets, or you’ve just spilled your morning coffee on your brand new, white sofa.

We asked our expert interior decorators for their best advice on how to keep your furniture clean, and here are their answers to the most commonly asked questions:

1. What is the most stain-resistant fabric for my sofa, sectional, or accent chair?

Microfibre is a really stain-resistant fabric. This densel- constructed material is made from synthetic materials that are generally very durable and tend to repel liquids.

Depending on the spill, you can use your vacuum to help clean the mess, you can use a water-based cleaning solution, or you can use a solvent-based cleaner. If you aren’t sure which cleaning solution to use, check the manufacturer’s website.

Other stain-resistant fabrics include wool and leather. While these two fabrics are more costly, they wear really well and, with proper care, will last a long time.

2. What is an effective, natural stain remover product?

At Smitty’s, we recommend using Zucora to remove your furniture stains in an effective, natural way.

Zucora’s plant-based products are safe to use in any part of your home, from your child’s bed to your dining room chair — it’s even safe to use on your dog bed!

3. What is pilling and how can I prevent it?

While furniture pilling is annoying, it is not dirt and may simply be attributed to the normal wear of your furniture.

Pilling can occur on both natural and synthetic fibres, although it typically occurs on mixed fabrics — for example, when cotton and polyester are blended together. When fibres are woven together, especially if they are loosely woven, they can create fibres that have a “hairy” appearance. When these hairy fibres rub together they will create pilling.

Fibres that are most prone to pilling include: cotton, polyester, wool, nylon, and acrylic.

If you experience pilling, you can use the following tools to remove the fuzz: a defuzzer, or even a new shaving razor. Just be careful to shave in short, gentle strokes in the same direction as the fibres.

Help your sofa to continue to look it's best by following Superstyle's upholstery care guide.

  • Vacuum often - not only will it keep your furniture clean, but dirt doesn’t get a chance to build up and get ground in.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight - even the most expensive fabrics may fade from too much sunlight.
  • Where possible, reverse the cushions every week. They’ll last longer and minimize fabric shift.
  • When cleaning upholstered furniture, try to use a reputable professional cleaner; if you clean it yourself, test an inconspicuous area of the fabric first.
  • Follow clean care (CC) instructions shown on seat label.
