It’s hot, it’s sunny, and it’s time for a summer decor refresh! Summer is the perfect time to add some bright and colourful accents to your home.

Our interior decorators have curated a list of the top items you can add to celebrate the season. We want to help you refresh your interior decor, so you will enjoy spending time in your home a little bit more this summer.

Bring the warmth and comfort of the season into every room of your home — it’s easy, we promise!

Wall Art

Wall art is one of the easiest ways to bring nature-inspired and colourful accents into your home. Whether it’s a print, a series of framed photos, hammered metal (featured in our showroom photo above), word collages, or mirrors, wall art will instantly add interest to your space.

Available in a wide range of sizes, frames, and colours, you can select a single piece or combine multiple pieces for visual interest.

Decorative wall shelving units (like the one in our showroom, pictured above) are ideal for displaying photos, small plants, and other accents pieces. This stylish shelf can also act as a focal point in your space and help to bring visual interest to an otherwise underused area of your wall.

If you are looking for some tips on what to hang, or advice on how to hang your wall art, click here to read our Wall Art Tips Blog.

Mirrors

Mirrors are functional and beautiful. Excellent additions to virtually any room in your home, mirrors will help to bring light into your space and provide an attractive focal point.

Easily combined with additional accessories and accent pieces (see showroom photo above), mirrors come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

(Durham Furniture Vineyard Creek Mirror)

From Durham Furniture’s classic Vineyard Creek Mirror to Liberty Furniture’s Sonoma Road Sideboard (below), you can easily incorporate a mirrored surface and brighten your space this summer.

(Decor-Rest 2052 Sofa)

Finally, the summer is here! At Smitty’s, we know that as the seasons change outside, homeowners also like to make changes inside. It’s an ideal time to refresh the look of your living spaces and bring some colour and nature inside.

Here are our interior decorators top recommendations for incorporating summer interior design trends into your home:

Invite Colour Inside

(Decor-Rest 2030 Sofa)

Bring the warmth and energy of the summer into your home by adding colour to your space.

Here are three key concepts to consider when adding colour to your home:

Cheery

Incorporate bright colours like pink, green, and yellow. Adding splashes of contrasting colour with throw pillows and vases is an easy way to add a cheery tone to your living room or bedroom.

(Decor-Rest Zina chair)

Warm

Add warm and inviting colours, like pastel tones. Consider coral, purple, blue, and a contrasting white to add dimension to your colour palette.

The stunning Zina chair, by Decor-Rest, features a gorgeous design and is covered with micro fibre for easy cleaning — it’s the perfect piece to update the look of your home this summer.

(Hooker Furniture Nesting Tables)

Shiny

Accent your space with splashes of shine. This can be achieved with copper or chrome accents, or even with throw pillows covered in a metallic-looking fabric. These nesting tables by Hooker Furniture are functional and stylish for any room in your home.

If you are looking to update your space with a new sofa, recliner, or accent chair, we recommend taking a look at Decor-Rest. Their collections are inspiring and provide a huge range of customization options to help you bring colour into your home.

Check out our online store or visit our showrooms and our interior decorators will help you select your options.

Incorporate Natural Materials

(Hooker Furniture Amani Rope and Glass Cocktail Table)

Adding natural fabrics and materials into your home never really goes out of style, and in the summer it is particularly nice to bring outdoor elements inside.

Bringing nature inside doesn’t mean that you have to have a green thumb — although adding plants, like succulents, are very much on-trend. You can incorporate natural elements by adding wood, linen, cotton, and other decorative items that feature natural materials or have floral or leaf patterns.

Here are two elements to consider when adding natural materials to your home this summer:

Wood

Wood is something that can work in any space. Stained or natural, live edge or smooth, wood can take on a variety of looks to suit your style.

If you are looking to make a statement with wood furniture, consider Hooker Fine Furniture. They have a huge range of wood products that are both functional and stylish.

(Hooker Furniture Console)

Linen

Linen is a lovely natural fabric that works well for throw pillows.

Typically found in natural tones like beige and cream, linen works well as a contrasting option amongst colourful accents or as part of a brighter colour palette. You can also find linen fabrics in leaf prints, for that added natural accent.

If you aren’t sure how to best to update your home, come and visit our interior decorators at Smitty’s. We will help you transform your space.

We all want a home that showcases our unique personality and highlights the important elements that make up our lives. Sure, model homes look fancy, but they don’t have much character and it’s pretty obvious that no one lives in them.

You have a life filled with memorable moments, adventures, and meaning — and when you welcome these elements into your space, you will bring it to life.

Here are a few key ways to personalize your space:

Personal Items & Momentos

A simple and effective way to personalize your space is to add personal items and mementos that are unique to you and your family.

Perhaps you’ve travelled to a special destination and brought home a souvenir, or maybe there’s a type of collection that you would like to feature. Highlighting these elements can be accomplished with photos, artwork, decorative pieces, and more.

Here are some examples of personal items worth highlighting in your space:

  • Collections
    • Antiques, toys, books, candles, vases, etc.
  • Photos
    • Photos that you’ve taken of family, friends, or nature; professional photos that you’ve purchased; or a mix of both.
  • Artwork
    • Sculptures, paintings, hand-crafted items, etc.
  • Souvenirs
    • Postcards, maps, trinkets, pottery, etc.

Photos, Photos & More Photos!

Adding photos and wall art to your space is definitely on trend.

Creating a gallery wall is a fun activity that allows you to mix and match photos, paintings, artwork, mirrors, and more. It’s an effective way to showcase your life, and it will be sure to help personalize your space.

Here are some do’s and don'ts for your photo space:

DO:

Add photos that have meaning to you in your life and fill you with positive thoughts or meaningful memories. This could include family photos, baby photos, travel photos, special holidays, pets, and more.

DON’T:

Showcase images that are highly personal or might be considered as over-sharing. This could include images with nudity, past relationships, and more.

DO:

Mix and match photos from different time periods and with different colours. You can have black and white or colour photos side-by-side, and you can exhibit photos from your parents’ childhood as well as your childrens’.

DON’T:

Cram every photo you love onto your wall. Be discerning and only select pictures that you will be happy to see every day. Make sure that you leave enough space between the images, so they have some space to breathe and you can take them in one at a time.

Custom Fabric & Design

(Palliser Klara chair)

Every room in your home is different, and you want your furniture to reflect your personality and style. At Smitty’s, we carry a wide variety of furniture that can be customized to suit your taste. You can choose your fabric, your furniture legs, your throw cushions, and more.

Here are some tips on customizing the fabric and design of your furniture:

  • Accent furniture, like chairs, coffee tables, and bedside tables can be customized. Chairs can be covered with leather or fabric in a wide range of colours to work in your space. Some brands, like Decor-Rest, also allow you to select the type of chair legs. Tables can be stained or painted in a variety of colours. Some brands, like Durham Furniture, will also allow you to select the number of drawers, hardware, and other features.

  • Sofas and sectionals can be customized to suit any space. Many brands, like Brentwood, offer a huge range of fabrics and leather options. Once you’ve selected your fabric, you can add throw cushions in accent tones to add an extra element of personalization.

There are many ways to personalize your space and make it your own.

(Bermex Prestige)

Every homeowner wants to have a dining room where they can enjoy meals with their family and friends, entertain guests, and showcase their stylish decor. This spring, Smitty’s is here to help you get inspired to refresh your dining room with some of our favourite dining rooms to copy!

Special acknowledgement to Architectural Digest for the images of celebrity homes.

Colourful Dining Rooms

(Burton table and Phoebe chairs)

Colourful dining rooms don’t have to be filled with a variety of colours, and adding colour to your dining room is something that you can do without painting the walls. This is not an exercise in overhauling your space — rather it’s about adding colourful elements.

You can keep your current dining table and update it with colourful (and comfortable) dining chairs. These powder blue Phoebe dining chairs by Amisco are gorgeous!

Bringing some colour into your space will help to refresh and update the look, and highlight particular elements, like your seating.

While some dining room furniture manufacturers will provide you with the opportunity to customize the style and finish of your table, it is often easier to add touches of colour with your chairs and decorative items.

Consider adding colour in the following ways:

  • Dining chairs
    • This can include different types of fabric and even different patterns.
  • Accent cushions
    • Adding small cushions to each chair is a great way to add a pop of colour.
  • Decorative items
    • Placing a variety of coloured vases, candle holders, bowls, sculptures, or other pieces on the centre area of your table is a fun way to add some colour — and it’s easy to change up to reflect a season, a mood, or a celebration.
  • Area rug
    • Adding a dining room area rug under your table and chairs is not only on trend, but will add a very stylish element to your space.

Regal Dining Rooms

(Bermex Expression Table)

There’s something to be said for having a dining room that looks classic, dignified, and elegant. A regal dining room will feature elements with formal touches and ornate finishes to bring a sense of majesty to the space.

Classically designed tables are a must-have when trying to achieve a formal look. Look for:

  • Simple table lines, in rectangular or oval shapes
  • Deep, rich tones
  • Solid wood
  • Wood or marble table tops, not glass
  • Strong table legs, not spindles
  • Larger table sizes, not built to incorporate a leaf

Glam Dining Rooms

(Bermex Glass Top Table)

While not every homeowner is a movie star or celebrity, you can achieve that same glamourous look in your dining room.

Glam dining rooms can be classic or modern and they can be colourful or simple. The idea behind a glam arrangement is that it exudes high-style. This doesn’t mean that your furniture is uncomfortable or should only be used for special occasions — having furniture in your home that you cannot use every day is a thing of the past!

Consider dining room furniture that:

  • Shines or sparkles, including high-gloss wood or a glass top
  • Luxurious padded and covered seating
  • Added ornamentation in the seating, including nailheads or stitching
  • Plush area carpeting
  • Metal or glass decor in the centre

(Best Home Furnishings Annabel Collection)

Spring is finally here! Congratulations — you made it through the long, cold winter.

Now it’s time to celebrate the sunshine by bringing warmth and colour into your home. This year, the top spring interior design trends are all about soft tones, fun styles, and feminine patterns and colours.

Here are some of the top ways that you can bring some spring into your home:

1. Colourful and Fun Patterns

Now is the time to get creative and add some fun to your living room, dining room, bedroom, guest room, or home office. Don’t worry about reinventing the entire space, painting the walls, or adding funky lighting.

You can achieve a fun and colourful look by adding a few simple items.

Patterned and colourful accent chairs

Patterns are not something to shy away from, and adding a patterned accent chair is the perfect way to bring some fresh energy to your room.

Best Home Furnishings has a wide variety of accent chairs to choose from, in a range of styles to suit any home. Try adding a classic wingback chair in your bedroom and a contemporary swivel barrel chair in your living room.

Customizable in a wide assortment of fabrics, you can select a solid colour with a colourful accent cushion or choose a busier pattern and make it the focal point of your living space.

(Palliser Klara Accent Chair)

Palliser’s Klara chair is described as a traditional accent chair with a modern twist. This gorgeous accent chair is not only comfortable, but it is also graceful and elegant. Suitable for virtually any room, this chair is highly-supportive and can be customized with your choice of fabric or leather upholstery. Top the chair with a contrasting throw cushion for a stylish addition to your home.

2. Feminine Colours

(Decor-Rest sofa 2133)

Lighter, softer, muted, and pastel colours are definitely on trend this spring. Gentle colours like muted pinks, soft greens, light blues, and faded purples are calming and will help to add some serenity to your space.

While you don’t want to incorporate pastels into every room, try and find some key ways to bring these more feminine colours into your home.

Decor-Rest designs and builds sofas, sectionals, ottomans, and chairs that can be customized to suit any room in your home. Add a sofa in a soft blue hue with contrasting throw pillows as accents, or try a custom-covered ottoman in a floral pattern to bring a fun focal point to your living room.

(Brentwood Savannah Sectional)

Brentwood Classics is known for making stylish, modern furniture with eco-friendly construction. Sturdy yet comfortable, their Savannah sectional is made with a certified sustainable, kiln-dried wood frame and soy-based polyfoam cushions. You can choose from a variety of fabrics and customize this stunning sectional in a pastel colour for your home.

3. Fun and Funky Styles

(Superstyle Bench)

Adding some fun, yet functional, furnishings to your home is a great way to update your space for the changing season. From side tables to benches to decorative items, bringing some colourful and uniquely-designed pieces into each room of your home is highly recommended this season.

Superstyle is another Canadian brand focused on crafting stylish furniture in elegant leathers and fabrics for every room in your home. Their leather bench (L917 featured above) is the perfect addition to a bedroom, guest room, hallway, or home office. Comfortable and colourful, it is a great way to usher in the spring season.

(Future Fine Furniture Chair 751)

Future Fine Furniture has a long history of designing and building beautifully-crafted furniture, and their customizable accent chairs, lounges, benches, sofas, and sectionals will wow you. Their occasional chairs are super comfortable and are a great way to add some fun to your living room, dining room, or home office.

(Universal Furniture)

Having fun with patterns doesn’t mean that your room is busy, crammed with accents, or filled with throw pillows. Incorporating a mix of patterns into your space, from your fabrics to your furniture, will add visual interest and dimension to your space.

You can be playful with patterns without stepping outside your theme, colour palette, style, or comfort zone. You don’t need to overdo it. You just have to find areas that could incorporate some patterning without looking forced.

Where To Incorporate Patterns

Almost any space in any room in your home can feature patterns, but not all rooms need it. Try to consider where patterns will make the nicest addition to your current layout. Here are some good places to incorporate patterns:

  • Place throw pillows in a variety of patterns and textures on your sofa, bed, or accent chairs.
  • Add an area rug to your living room, dining room, or bedroom.
  • Include furniture that features detailing (like nailheads or stitching).
  • Add accent furniture or larger pieces that offer design elements in their structure.

Boho Chic Patterns

Achieving a boho chic look is on-trend and can be achieved by adding pops of colour and patterns throughout your space.

Add a solid-coloured sofa and top it with a variety of different coloured throw pillows. Place a colourful area rug on the floor and add a metal or wood coffee table on top. Then complete your look with a mix of vases, candle holders, mirrors, and lamps.

Classic Patterns

Adding patterns to your space doesn’t mean you have to be wild and funky, or fill your space with colour. Select patterns that blend well with your sofa and accent chairs — don’t look for an accent tone, find a tone that matches your existing fabrics.

Incorporating furniture that features design elements in their construction will help to achieve a patterned look without looking too “out there”. Try adding a side table with an designed chrome structure for a base, or a console table with an interesting design. Adding circular furnishings is a great way to add visual interest or a focal point.

Tabletop decor is the difference between having a stylish, welcoming table and an uninspiring table that makes you want to sit somewhere else.

From dining tables to side tables to console tables, every table can benefit from decor. Here are some expert tips on selecting the right decor for your home:

Choose Table Decor Carefully

While we might enjoy flipping through magazines, admiring all the nicely decorated rooms and tabletops, it’s important to remember that we do not live in magazines! We actually eat at our tables, entertain at our tables, and even do homework and pay bills at our tables.

When you select your tabletop decor, make sure that it fits with your day-to-day life. It might be lovely to have large bowls of fruit on display, but it may also be impractical.

If you have pets or children, don’t forget about them! You shouldn’t put fragile vases or lit candle holders on a coffee table or side table, as there is a risk to them getting knocked over. Remember that design should not trump lifestyle.

Popular tabletop decor items that can work include:

  • Vases with fresh flowers
  • Vases with fruit (limes and lemons are a classic choice)
  • Decorative art pieces or sculptures
  • Candleholders
  • Bowls with other items inside them (it doesn’t have to be fruit!)

Try a variety of options over a period of a few weeks. Move items around from room to room and tabletop to tabletop. You can even change out your decor with the changing seasons — it’s all up to you.

Happy New Year! It’s another new year filled with promise. At Smitty’s, we know how much joy and excitement a new year can bring. If you’ve been thinking about making some interior decorating changes or upgrades, we can help. After all, new year = new furniture.

Time for a Change

If you’ve been sitting on the same worn out sofa, eating at the same scratched table, and sleeping on the same sagging mattress, then enough is enough. It’s time for a change.

“A house with old furniture has no need of ghosts to be haunted.”

― Hope Mirrlees, Lud-in-the-Mist

If you’re like most people, you probably have many areas in your home that you want to update and refresh. Maybe you’ve grown tired of your colour scheme, or your furniture doesn’t reflect your style, or perhaps you’ve been inspired by something you saw in a magazine and you want to get that look in your space.

Change can be re-decorating and re-furnishing an entire home, or it can be as simple as swapping out your bed. Whatever you are looking to achieve, here are a few ideas to inspire your interior decorating changes.

Matte Black is Where It’s At!

(Amisco Elgin bed)

Matte black furniture is not only on trend, but it’s the kind of colour that doesn’t really go out of style. Easily paired with existing furniture, matte black can blend in with your decor without looking out of place.

By contrast, matte black can also act as an accent and work to highlight a particular room, theme, or area — or it can stand out on its own and bring some drama to your space.

Black can be added to virtually any space, from bedrooms to kitchens.

(Amisco Dirk table)

Amisco has a wide variety of matte black furniture pieces including, bed frames, stools, chairs, dining tables, coffee tables, and more.

(Amisco Tacoma dining table)

  • Mix and match black with distressed wood for a contemporary look.

  • Trying pairing a black and chrome coffee table with a luxurious rug for a high-style look.

  • Add a leather chair and ottoman for an urban look.

    (Decor-Rest Romeo chair)

Bronze, Not Brass

(Decor-Rest)

Brass went out in the 80s and there’s no looking back. Bronze, on the other hand, is not only in style, but timeless in the same way as matte black. Bronze accents and decorative items, finishing details, and even table bases are a classic addition to any home.

(Artage Hop table)

  • Try adding a bronze lamp, bronze candle holders, or a bronze decorative bowl to your decor and you will be amazed by how much visual interest it brings to your space.

  • One of the easiest ways to incorporate bronze into your decor is by adding a mirror with a bronze frame. Try adding this to your hallway, bedroom, bathroom, or living room.

  • Wall art is another great way to add bronze into your decor without taking up additional floor space.

(Surya mirror)

Expert tip: Place your mirror in a location where it will reflect light coming into your home via a window. This kind of placement will carry the light into your room and help to brighten your space.

Drama, Drama, Drama

(Superstyle Furniture Bench 530)

Whatever your style, whatever room you are updating, whatever theme you are going for, be sure to add some drama to your space. Don’t be afraid of colours, patterns, or shapes.

Adding just one stand-out piece in any room can elevate the design and overall look of the space.

(Hooker Furniture Thicket Console)

Adding something bold doesn’t mean that it has to overtake your space, it can be something as small as an accent pillow or a lamp.

There are so many gorgeous ways to upgrade your home with new furniture this year. Come and visit us at Smitty’s for some inspiration and our interior decorating experts will guide you through the best options for your home.

One of the most popular interior decorating trends in recent years is to mix and match metallics in your decor.

Over the past year, we have seen entire rooms blend different kinds of metals together. Whether it’s on the wall or on a coffee table, mixing chrome and bronze or silver and gold is where it’s at.

How To Mix & Match Metallics

Making this look work in your home is easier than you might think. There really are no right or wrong ways to blend metallics, when it comes to accent pieces.

While you wouldn’t want to have all bronze dining chairs with a chrome table, you can certainly have a group of bronze vases on a chrome tray. Or champagne-coloured candle holders with rose gold decorative accents.

Expert Tip: Try incorporating this look on a smaller scale to start. Adding candle holders, vases, or wall decor in groupings will look great and won’t require a significant investment. Save the bronze accent chairs or chrome coffee table for another time, once you are confident that the style will work in your home.

Pair shiny metallics, like gold or chrome, with more muted tones like antique bronze. You can try this look on a dining table or coffee table, or you can create visual interest on a countertop in your kitchen or bathroom. Wherever you place your grouping, you will create an interesting focal point.

If you would rather attempt this look on a wall, you can incorporate a variety of different-sized mirrors and photos with metallic frames, or even chrome deer heads (which are very on-trend).

It’s the time of year when many of us start preparing to host family and friends for holiday festivities. From Chanukah and Christmas to Kwanza and New Year’s, there’s lots to celebrate!

Sometimes we just don’t know where to begin — and that’s what makes the entryway the best place to start.

First impressions are made when people step into your home, so here are our top three ways to make your home welcoming:

Entryway Furniture

(Artage entryway table pictured above.)

Entryways can be both welcoming and functional. They are also high traffic areas that are highly visible and set the tone for the rest of your home.

From having a functional place to hang your coat or place your purse, to a place where you can showcase seasonal decor, the entryway is an important space in your home. It’s an ideal space for form to meet function.

Depending on your space, we suggest adding:

(Bermex BE54-1201 bench pictured above.)

  • A stylish bench.
    • This will not only look fantastic, but will provide a place for guests to sit when putting on and taking off their boots.
  • A sleek console table.
    • These slim tables are great for entryways, offering a place to drop your keys or display seasonal decor.
  • A helpful coat tree.
    • Coat trees are not only practical for holding coats and scarves, they are also an on-trend focal point in your entryway.

Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to bring light and sparkle into a space, and an entryway is an ideal place for a mirror, as people tend to check their appearance when entering or leaving a house.

Mirrors come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colours. You can mix and match them on a wall, or even lean them up against one another on a shelf or on the floor. The options are virtually endless.

Depending on your space, you can add a single large mirror, or multiple smaller mirrors. Alternating design and shape is on-trend and will bring visual interest to your entryway. Mirrors can also be hung or placed on a shelf or table.

Try mixing and matching glass mirrors with chrome and brass mirrors. Combining these three elements will bring a sparkle to your entryway. There are no rules, so play around until you find the perfect arrangement.

Area Rugs

Area rugs are often forgotten, but they make up an integral part of your entryway’s aesthetic.

Stepping on the entryway rug is the first thing — and last thing — people will do when they come to your home.It is important to have a rug that can handle some wear and tear, while still looking fabulous.

Kalora rugs offer a stunning array of area rugs to suit any home. From wool, to jute, to synthetic fibres, they have it all.If you’re concerned about stains, consider a patterned rug — patterns are a great way to conceal potential dirt or stains.

Come into Smitty’s today and find the perfect additions to make your entryway welcoming and spectacular!
