At Smitty’s, we want to help you furnish and decorate your home with beautiful, stylish, quality furniture and decor that works — whatever your lifestyle.
Each month we will feature a decorating tip to help you achieve your interior decorating dreams.
If you have questions or tips that you would like our Smitty’s interior decorators to answer, just let us know. _______________________________________________________________________ Not every home is filled with light, and often the entryway of a home can be quite dark. At Smitty’s, we often get asked for our best tips on brightening dark entryways.
Here are few expert ideas to try in your home:
Add mirrors
Mirrors are one of the most effective, and simplest, ways that you can bring light into any space — entryways in particular.
You can place a medium-sized mirror by the door, you can arrange several smaller mirrors in a gallery-style formation to fill a larger space on your wall, or you can hang (or lean) a large mirror on one wall in your entryway. If you opt for the large mirror, be sure to place it on the wall opposite the way your door opens — you don’t want to risk the door handle opening and breaking the glass!
Smitty’s Pro Tip: Mirrors will not only reflect light and help to bring it into your home, but hanging two mirrors opposite each other will double the light and help to create depth in a front hall that is narrow and dark.
Add lighting
Ceiling lighting isn’t always enough to brighten a dark entryway. We recommend adding a floor lamp (if you have the room) or a table lamp on your front hall console table. Even adding a small lamp on an entry table will definitely help to bring light into your entryway.
Read more about how to place lamps in our ‘Don’t Forget Your Lighting’ blog.
Add glass and light-coloured accent pieces
If you have room for a console table, we recommend a chrome and glass topped table. The glass will help open up your space by letting the light flow through. Then, top your table with white or neutral-coloured decorative items to add bright accents.
