Don’t forget your lighting!
At Smitty’s, we often have customers who purchase new furniture, have it installed in their home, and then feel like something isn’t right. Sometimes the look will feel incomplete and other times it may feel dreary. The reason for this feeling isn’t because you’ve purchased the wrong furniture — it’s because you haven’t considered the lighting.
Don’t forget your lamps!
Lighting is an important part of every room and can help to elevate the look and feel of your space.
There are more lighting options on the market than ever before, so it can be difficult to know what sort of lighting will work best in your space.
Here are a few important tips to keep in mind when selecting lighting for your space:
1. Scale your lighting.
Scaling your lighting means taking into consideration the size of your floor lamp or table lamp to ensure that it fits well with your furniture. For example, if you have smaller pieces, or condo-sized furniture, you don’t want your floor lamp to tower over your sofa.
2. Don’t go overboard.
There are so many beautiful options for lamps that it can be tempting to overdo it. Remember, just because you need lighting doesn’t mean that you necessarily need floor lamps, hanging lamps, and table lamps.
For example, if your room offers a lot of natural light, you may opt for a couple of floor lamps in the corners of the room, to supplement your natural light, and you may not require table lamps.
3. Matching isn't required.
While you do want your style and room elements to work together and flow, your lamps don’t necessarily have to match. You can choose different colours and shapes for both table lamps or floor lamps, and that’s perfectly okay.
There are many other important elements that should be reviewed when selecting lamps, including how the room is being used, which way the windows face, and if there are any doorways in the room.
