In 2020 our homes became the center of our worlds. It’s where many of us work, where we gather as a family, and where we spend the majority of our days. Form, as they say, follows function, and so design trends for 2021 reflect the new ways in which our homes function in our lives. Now more than ever, home needs to be the place where we want to be. It should feel comfortable, calming, and relaxing – a place to breathe deep and let go. To that end, this year’s home decor trends embrace harmony with nature. From style to materials to color, we are bringing the natural beauty of the outdoors in.

In 2021, it’s decorator’s choice, what’s important is that your home reflects you while keeping it comfortable, up-to-date, and modern. This year we are seeing a new kind of minimalism, a definite move away from stark, almost bare interiors to rooms that feel welcoming and cozy yet uncluttered and fresh. Our interiors should be minimal but luxurious. In our living rooms and bedrooms, we love anything that is overstuffed. We want sofas, chairs, and sectionals that invite us to curl up. Think down-filled cushions and rounded edges that lend softness and classic elegance.

Brentwood Classic's Marcus sectional embraces this cozy clean aesthetic perfectly. Features such as rounded sofa arms and a pleated slipcover create a timeless and inviting look. Natural materials and fibres such as wood, cotton, wool, stone, and metal are used throughout the room to hint at the outdoors, adding a sense of calm and refinement.

Bringing nature in means incorporating earthy organic materials and textures. We’re thinking of wood, stone, metal, leather, cotton, and wool. These materials are not only on-trend, they are also renewable and recyclable. As interior design catches up with the environmental movement, designers are embracing eco-friendly materials. In addition to the more commonly used natural materials in furniture design, we are also seeing increased use of bamboo, straw, and rattan – all of which grow fast, are plentiful, and incredibly durable.

And this year, don’t be afraid to mix and match. We are thinking a lot about texture and the way different materials can come together to create interesting new looks. Try pairing a woven rattan chair with a white sheepskin throw, add a glass-top side table and woven wool rug and you’ve got a stunning natural look. If luxury and opulence are your preference, try a combination of leather, marble, metal, and a touch of refined crystal.

Canadian manufacturers such as Palliser give you a wide range of choices when selecting materials for your sofa. This rich brown leather is luxurious and comfortable.

It’s a known fact that colour affects mood. This year’s colour palette reflects our focus on nature and calm. Neutrals such as, white, cream, and grey and beige tones remain a staple that provide a beautiful natural foundation upon which to build your room’s colour scheme. When adding colour this year, go earthy - muted saturated reds, bright yellows, burnt oranges, olive and mossy greens, and brown tones. These earthy colours will contrast beautifully with your neutrals and will keep the room feeling clean, fresh, and bright.

Like Palliser, Canadian manufacturer Brentwood Classics gives you a choice of fabrics and colors for your sofa. This mossy green by Brentwood Classics hints at the forest, while the cream-colored throw pillow with black geometric design maintains a modern look.

As you head into this new year, consider some of these ideas for freshening up your home. Think about what you can do to make your home the sanctuary that it should be. Our designers at Smitty’s are always happy to help, contact us for a free in-store or virtual consultation
