Banners from Smitty's Fine Furniture show 3 reasons why we love Canadian Made Furniture

At Smitty’s Fine Furniture, we are proud to support Canadian craftsmanship. Drop by either of our stores and you’ll see banners displaying the many reasons why you should ‘buy Canadian’. For instance, did you know that 100,000 Canadians are employed by the furniture industry? Or that Canadian hardwood is built to stand up better to Canadian weather conditions?

All of these reasons are important, yet we care about Canadian Made Furniture for a much simpler reason. Canadian furniture is ours, it’s part of our story — and it feels right in your home.

The Story of Canadian Furniture

Canadian furniture has a rich history that begins in Ontario, back in the 19th century. Early furniture was built by settlers, until the first Canadian furniture company was established in Berlin (now Kitchener) in 1830; the next, in Toronto in 1834. The industry continued to develop primarily in Ontario, for the rest of the 1800s.

By the end of the 19th century, an initial influx of German pioneers had settled in and around the town of Hanover in Grey County. Led by individuals such as Daniel Knechtel, Henry Peppler and Jared Spiecz, the town established many factories and business manufacturing furniture, earning it the title of “The Furniture Capital of Canada” by the 1920s.

In 1949, Smitty’s original location was founded in Hanover, by Edward Schmidt (also known as Smitty), who was employed as a head finisher at the Peppler Furniture Company. In this way, Smitty’s became part of the next chapter in the story of Canadian furniture. In 1963, Smitty’s moved from the original location to the current Hanover store.

Today, Canada is the 5th largest exporter of furniture in the world. The Canadian furniture industry is 97% Canadian owned and consists of many small or medium-sized businesses that are also family-owned and operated. Smitty’s is proud to continue supporting them and the craftspeople employed in the Canadian furniture industry — and we hope you feel the same!

Our Canadian Furniture Store

When you step into Smitty’s Fine Furniture, you are stepping into our living room. As a small town company, we are built on the values of honesty and respect. That only seems right to us. After all, when you go home with a piece of furniture from Smitty’s, you will be literally inviting us into yours!
